For admitted students

Checklist for admitted students

  • Apply for residence permit (non EU/EEA citizens) or book an appointment in order to register your residence at the Finnish Immigration Service (EU/EEA citizens).

In case you are not an EU or EEA citizen, please start your residence permit application. For more information, please see attached a notice from Finnish Immigration Service and SECCLO website. Remember to register in the Finnish Population Information System at the same time when applying for the residence permit so that you can receive a Finnish personal identity code with your residence permit card. You need the Finnish personal identity code e.g. for opening a bank account in Finland, in order to get a Finnish student card mobile application (www.frank.fi), etc.

In case you are an EU/EEA citizen, you do not have to apply for residence permit, but you have to register your residence at the Finnish Immigration Service after arrival in Finland. Please book an appointment already in summer, as the service is very crowded in autumn. For more information, please see attached a notice from Finnish Immigration Service and SECCLO website (Practical Information).

  • Apply for accommodation

Please note that Aalto University does not own dormitories, instead two main providers of student housing in Finnish capital area are HOAS (Foundation for Student Housing in the Helsinki Region) and AYY (Aalto University Student Union). HOAS has both furnished and unfurnished accommodation, AYY has only unfurnished accommodation. It is difficult to get a student apartment from Finnish capital area especially for autumn, therefore you might have to consider other options as well from private market. You can find more information on accommodation for international students at SECCLO website (Practical information).

  • Organize your travel to Finland.

You are expected to arrive to Aalto University 3rd September, 2018. You can arrive to Finland earlier if your residence permit allows it. If you live at HOAS or AYY from September onwards, you can get your key on 3rd September the earliest. Therefore, if you arrive earlier, please prepare hostel, hotel or Airbnb accommodation for the meantime.
